Ty Listing Beanies As Being Retired Already

Diane K. informed us that on a visit to the Ty web site she noticed that the Beanie Babies set to retire on December 31st are already listed under the retired Beanie Babies section. Ty removed the 26 Beanies that are set for retirement at the end of the month from the currents section yesterday.

We have received a few reports of a new bear named Friend that was given out at the Salvation Army. Here a few emails. (please note we can not confirm this one way or another.)

Acia writes: Dear Toybox,
I was giving away some old clothes today when I received a bear for my donation, his name is Friend. He is a weird shiny light blue with a metallic gold ribbon, he's beautiful! His tag reads:
The Salvation Army and Ty Present Friend The Bear On this day 12-14-98 To raise money For the salvation army To donate to families for christmas Love Ty On the other side it reads: Thank you for your donations, Happy Holidays

Ty- he signed it! The woman said only 200 were made! The backside has the salvation army logo and the usual text on ty tags Hope this is handy,

A reader writes: Here is the story, at 6:00 pm today the salvation army gave away 200 Beanie babie bears named "Friend" to people who donated 200 dollars or more. The lady said only 200 were made and each state got 4.

Ty has a new employee bear!
At a Ty show held in Chicago from December 11-14, Ty Inc. gave its representatives a red bear called "The #1 Bear," a new teddy with "#1" embroidered on his chest.

The bear, which is made of a soft, non-Tylon fabric, is autographed by Ty Warner. According to a Ty representative who spoke exclusively to "Mary Beth's Beanie World," 253 were issued - Ty Warner kept the number one #1 bear. The rep said the announcement was met with "silence" and that the company was surprised to get the teddy. New Ty employees who were hired in the past 60 days received an Erin bear.

The hang tag reads, "In appreciation of selling over several billion dollars during 1998 and achieving the industry ranking of: #1 if gift sales, #1 in collectible sales, #1 in cash register area sales, #1 in Markup %, I present to you This signed and Numbered Bear." The tush tag says "#1."

Early rumors about the bear surfaced Monday on several Beanie Web sites. Picture coming soon...

Friday, December 11, 1998 Mystic Picture - Can Be Created Just a quick note concerning this "new Mystic". If you were to unravel the current coarse maned Mystic it would appear as it does in the photo you have. As for the color any magic marker would do the trick. I cannot see Ty changing Mystic again, not to mention the cost of making the "new" mane. It must cost a fortune to have a factory worker sew the fibers in. I also had a good look at the horn in the picture, it looks questionalbe to me. It could be the picture, but..... Just a thought. K&J

Gobbles Difference? Gobbles - There are at least 2 different versions of Gobbles. My 9-year-old daughter Valerie pinned this one. I know you don't list different tag generations separately, but in Gobbles' case, there is a major physical difference between the 4th & 5th generation. On the 4th generation, that "thing" that hangs from below his chin to his neck (a wattle) is DOUBLE, just like it is on Strut. However, on the 5th generation, it is only single. I think this is a significant difference warranting distinguishing of the two. A dealer I mentioned this to told me that there might be even more versions of the single "wattle" (possibly single-layer, double-layer glued together, double layer stitched together), but I have not been able to confirm these. For now, I think the single & double distinction will do. Check link below for a scan: http://www.ctoys.com/news/wattle.jpg -John
